Introduction to the BUOLUS project

VOXELGRID, as the central technological partner in the BUOLUS project coordinated by the Fraunhofer Institute for Building Physics IBP, uses advanced technologies to increase climate resilience and quality of life in urban areas. The main goal is to mitigate the urban heat island effect through innovative 3D modeling and simulation technologies.

Technology use at VOXELGRID

Using laser scanning, infrared thermography and hyperspectral sensing, VOXELGRID creates detailed 3D city models. These models are crucial to analyze the heat absorption and storage of different building materials in urban neighborhoods and serve as a basis for the development of climate-resilient urban infrastructures.

Adaptation measures to improve the microclimate

VOXELGRID contributes to the development of effective adaptation measures against the urban heat island effect through simulation-based assessments. These include short-term, flexible solutions such as temporary shading and long-term measures such as the modification of building materials to improve the reflection of solar radiation. These measures are based on the simulation of the urban climate using the PALM-4U model, allowing the impact of each measure to be evaluated before implementation.

Integration into urban planning systems

VOXELGRID's 3D models are integrated into municipal GIS systems, improving decision-making and optimizing urban planning. These models help urban planners and decision makers to develop and implement effective strategies to mitigate the urban heat island effect.

Promoting citizen participation

VOXELGRID promotes citizen participation by facilitating access to important data and involving residents directly in the urban planning process. Through transparent and interactive approaches, community acceptance and support for sustainable urban developments is strengthened.

Focus on sustainable urban transformation

By providing highly accurate and comprehensive data models, VOXELGRID contributes to making cities sustainable and resilient to the challenges of climate change. These models enable an in-depth analysis and visualization of the impact of urban design on the local climate, thereby improving the quality of life for all city dwellers.
